Al-Qamishli: Azadî functionary released from prison

KURDWATCH, April 14, 2011—Muhammad ʿAbdi Saʿdun was released from prison in al-Qamishli on April 9, 2011. Following his arrest on May 20, 2010, Saʿdun, a teacher and member of the politburo for the Kurdish Freedom Party in Syria (Azadî), was initially held in solitary confinement for three days at the State Security Service's remand prison in al-Qamishli. He subsequently spent sixteen days at the State Security Service's remand prison in Damascus and eleven days in the Political Security Directorate’s remand prison in Damascus. Eleven of those twenty-seven days were spent in solitary confinement. Saʿdun was then transferred to Aleppo and from there to al-Qamishli. On September 30, 2010, the single military judge there sentenced him to one year in prison pursuant to Article 307 of the Criminal Code.
