Aleppo: Single military judge releases two PYD supporters – two more remain in custody

January 14, 2010 – On January 12, 2010, the single military judge in Aleppo released Lokan Silêman Xidir (b. 1980, married, one daughter) and Idrîs Mihemed Mihemed (b. 1983) from custody. On August 10, 2009, members of the State Security had arrested the above-named individuals in al‑Qamishli, along with Rêwan Cemîl Cemîl (b. 1985, married, one son) and Enwer Ebdilrehman Elî (b. 1977, married, three children). The arrests took place after PKK slogans were painted on walls by unknown persons. While in custody in al‑Qamishli, at least one of the detainees was tortured with blows to the soles of the feet (the so‑called Falaqa method). Ten days after their arrest, the four supporters of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) were brought to the Political Security Directorate’s al‑Faihaʾ prison in Damascus. They remained in custody there for twenty days before being transferred to ʿAdra prison, also in Damascus. On January 10, 2010, their case was referred to the military prosecution in Aleppo. The four detainees were also transferred to Aleppo. They were charged with membership of an illegal organization pursuant to Article 288 of the Criminal Code. The organization concerned is the Democratic Youth Movement, the youth organization of the PYD. Rêwan Cemîl Cemîl and Enwer Ebdilrehman Elî are still in custody.
