Aleppo: Human rights activist not allowed to leave Syria

February 26, 2010 – Attorney and human rights activist Redîf Enwer Mistefa (b. 1967) has been refused exit from Syria. Mistefa, chairman of the Kurdish Committee for Human Rights in Syria (al-Rasid) and coordinator of the Syrian Coalition Against the Death Penalty, had applied for an exit permit in order to attend a convention on the death penalty in Geneva at the end of February 2010. KurdWatch has information that the Political Security Directorate and the State Security in Aleppo are responsible for the ban on his leaving the country. For the past three years, Mistefa has had to petition regularly for permission to exit if he wants to leave Syria. All of his petitions have been denied thus far.
