Aleppo: MAF member provisionally released after solitary confinement

KURDWATCH, September 4, 2010—On September 1, 2010, the third single military judge in Aleppo released ʿAbdulhafiz ʿAbdulrahim ʿAbdulrahman from custody. After his arrest on March 2, 2010, he was first held for eleven days by the Military Intelligence Service in Aleppo. He then spent six days in custody at the branch of the Political Security Directorate in Aleppo, and one and a half months at the branch in Damascus. ʿAbdulrahman told KurdWatch that he was regularly insulted and was forced to spend the entire time in darkened solitary confinement. His eyesight deteriorated as a result of his lack of exposure to light. ʿAbdulrahman spent the last four months in custody in Aleppo’s civil prison, before his subsequent release. Proceedings are pending before the court; the next hearing will take place on September 19, 2010. [Further information on the case]
