Aleppo: One and a half year prison sentence for PYD supporter—torture in pretrial custody

KURDWATCH, October 9, 2010—On September 26, 2010, the military tribunal in Aleppo sentenced Taymur Ibrahim Ibrahim (b. 1954, five children) to a one-and-a-half-year prison sentence pursuant to Article 278 of the Criminal Code. A supporter of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), Ibrahim was arrested by members of the State Security in al‑Qamishli on March 17, 2009. During the twenty days he spent in pretrial custody, he was tortured with blows to the soles of his feet to the point that he could no longer walk. Ibrahim was subsequently brought to the State Security in Damascus where he was also tortured with blows and electric shocks. On May 5, 2009, Ibrahim was transferred to Aleppo. As Taymur Ibrahim had already been in custody for more than one and a half years, he was released following the verdict on September 26, 2010.
