KurdWatch, January 12, 2016—On December 28, 2015 fighters from Syrian Democratic Forces, which is dominated by the People's Defense Units (YPG) of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), began attacking Syrian opposition territory east of ʿAfrin. The Democratic Forces captured the villages Malikiyah, Shawarighat al‑Jawz and Kishtaʿar. The operations center of Mariʿ, which coordinates the local milita of the Syrian opposition, explained all treaties with the PYD invalid. According to information provided by the operations center, the attack was supported by the Russian air force.
On December 28 and 29, several rockets fell on the seized villages as well in on the city of ʿAfrin. PYD‑affiliated media accused the Syrian opposition of being responsible for the shelling. Whereas the operations center of Mariʿ stated that the YPG as well as the Jaysh al-Thuwwar fired rockets at ʿAfrin. Before joining the Syrian Democratic Forces, the milita of the Jaysh al-Thuwwar (»Army of the Revolutionaries«) fought together with the Syrian opposition.
