Al-Qamishli: Amir Murad is once again free

KurdWatch, January 2, 2016—Amir Murad, chief editor of the independent radio station »Hêvî«, was set free on December 28, 2015 [further information]. According to information from KurdWatch the Asayiş, the security service of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), were mainly interested in Murad’s e-mails and his Facebook account. He had to give them his password and his contacts were checked. In addition, Murad was informed that it had been known to the Asayiş that »Hêvî« did not publish the false report on the death of the Asayiş leader Jiwan Ibrahim, but that the website was hacked. Given this background it is unclear why Murad was abducted at all. An activist told KurdWatch: »I think they wanted to make an example in order to intimidate people. Once they noticed how far the arrest of Amir Murad, and also of Faraidun Qitshu [further information], had been reported, they realized they had gone too far. They released both journalists so they wouldn’t damage their international reputation.«
