KurdWatch, January 11, 2016—On January 4, 2015, several people abducted Jangin ʿAliko, an employee of the Yekîtî Media website of the Kurdish Unity Party in Syria (Yekîtî), in ad‑Darbasiyah. The kidnappers drove a vehicle belonging to the Asayiş, the security service of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), but were not wearing uniforms. ʿAliko was handed over to a second group outside of ad‑Darbasiyah, who then beat him brutally with iron bars. He suffered fractures to his arms and legs and a finger was cut off. He was then transported in the trunk of a car to a field aprroximately twenty kilometers away, thrown out of the vehicle and left to fend for himself. According to a statement made by the Asayiş, the kidnappers were not employees of the security service. ʿAliko reported to KurdWatch that the car that took him out of ad‑Darbasiyah passed through two Asayiş checkpoints without being controlled.
Lastly, a journalist from Yekîtî Media was kidnapped by the Asayiş on December 26, 2015 [further information].
