KurdWatch, January 13, 2016—On January 3, 2016, the People’s Defense Units (YPG) of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) published a list with eighteen dead YPG fighters. According the YPG, the fighters were killed on December 30, 2015 during a clash with the Islamic State (IS) close to the small city of ʿAin ʿIsa, around thirty-five kilometers south of Tell Abyad (Girê Sipî). At least one of the fighters named on the list is a minor. The fifteen-year-old Muhammad Naqshi Muhammad ʿAli had been recruited to the YPG just months earlier.
Since it was formed, the YPG regularly publish photos as well as the personal data of fighters killed. This applies also to most of the just published list. However, there was no photo made of Muhammad Naqshi Muhammad ʿAli. Whether or not this was intentional to hide his age, and whether the second person whose photo is missing, Ahmad Khalil Khalaf, is also a minor, remains unclear. No birthdates of the fighters on the list were given.
