Aleppo: Struggle for supply routes continues

KurdWatch, August 16, 2016—On July 27, 2016, the Syrian Democratic Forces, dominated by the Democratic Union Party’s (PYD) People’s Defense Units (YPG), expelled Syrian opposition units from the Aleppo neighborhood of as‑Sakan ash‑Shababi as well as from parts of the Bani Zaid neighborhood. Soldiers for the Syrian regime expelled the remaining opposition forces out of Bani Zaid. As a result, all of the supply routes for the Syrian opposition in the eastern district of Aleppo are entirely cut off. On August 6, however, opposition forces were able to seize vast areas south of Aleppo and open up a new supply route. Subsequently the regime is encircled in the western districts of the city and now only has access through areas controlled by the YPG.
