ʿAfrin: Death threats for handing out Kurdish flags

KurdWatch, August 25, 2016—On August 7, 2016, the Asayiş, the security service of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), released Sarbast Khalil and Nazir Barakat. The members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria (PDK‑S) were detained for two weeks [further information]. They handed out Kurdish flags on July 15 during the funeral of the Kurdish singer Bave Salah in ʿAfrin. The use of Kurdish flags is not officially prohibited in PYD‑controlled areas. However, the PYD, like other organizations close to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), uses other symbols than the other Kurdish parties. Thus, the PYD tries repeatedly to prevent the use of Kurdish flags in areas it controls. Khalil and Barakat received death threats from Asayiş employees while they were detained if they continued to carry out such actions.
