KurdWatch, August 19, 2016—On August 13, 2016, the Asayiş, the security service of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), abducted Ibrahim Biro in the city center of al‑Qamishli. Biro is the chairman of the Kurdish National Council as well as the Kurdish Union Party in Syria (Yekîtî). He was released in the early morning of August 14 on the Syrian‑Iraqi border and forced to leave the country. He was threatened with death if he returned to Syria.
Yekîtî members demonstrated already on August 13 in front of their party office in al‑Qamishli; there, roughly one hundred participants demanded the release of their chairman.
