KurdWatch, August 21, 2016—On August 15, 2016, the Asayiş, the security service of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), broke into the party office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party – Syria (PDK‑S) in al‑Qamishli and abducted several people who were in the office. This included the politburo member Muhammad Ismaʿil and Nashʾat Zaza as well as the central committee members ʿAbdulkarim Hajhi and Nafiʿ ʿAbdullah. At the time of the raid, PDK‑S members and sympathizers had met to prepare for the participation in the funeral of a Roj‑Peshmerga who was killed fighting the Islamic State (IS) in Iraqi‑Kurdistan.
On the same day in ʿAmudah and al‑Qamishli at least nine members of the Kurdish Union Party in Syria (Yekîtî) were abducted by the Asayiş, including central committee members Hasan Salih and ʿAbdullah Gado as well as three local party politicians. All had participated in the funeral of the Peshmerga who had been killed.
