KurdWatch, August 22, 2016—On August 15, 2016, the press council in the Jazirah canton prohibited all journalists from reporting on events not already approved. In the future, this will only be possible with special permission. Any infringements can mean legal consequences. What this really means is a ban on reporting on any events or demonstrations organized by the Kurdish National Council. The latter does not register its demonstrations with the local administration, which was appointed by the Democratic Union Party (PYD), because it does not recognize this adminstration as legitimate.
The establishment of the press council is based on a press law passed on December 19, 2015 by the legislative council in the Jazirah canton, which was appointed by the PYD [download press law].
