KurdWatch, August 27, 2016—On August 13, 2016, the eighteen‑year‑old Nasrin Husayn died in an explosion in Manbij. One year earlier Husayn had joined the Asayiş, the Democratic Union Party’s (PYD) security service, in al‑Qamischli. Asayiş employees normally assume the police activities and are not involved in combat operations. Husayn was relocated to Manbij with numerous other Asayiş employees to fight the Islamic State (IS).
According to unconfirmed reports, around three hundred Asayiş employees were apparently arrested at the beginning of August because they refused to fight in in Aleppo and Manbij.
