Istanbul: Future Movement founds military wing

KURDWATCH, October 30, 2014—From October 17 to 19, 2014, delegates of the Kurdish Future Movement in Syria held a party congress in Istanbul. According to the closing statement on October 20, 2014, those present decided by a large majority to create a military wing in order to protect civilians in the Kurdish regions. The statement emphasizes that the military wing is bound by the Geneva Convention and international treaties regarding respect for human rights. Furthermore, those gathered decided to work covertly in Syria in order to avoid persecution by representatives of the Syrian regime and the Democratic Union Party (PYD). The previous European representative, Siamand Hajo, was elected chairman. A leadership council comprised of nine additional people was also elected. The names of four members of the leadership council were kept secret.
A fraction of the Future Movement do not recognize the party congress and this faction elected a new communication office at the same time. A key issue in the dispute between the two wings of the party is the position vis‑à‑vis the Democratic Union Party (PYD).
