Aleppo: Attorney threatened with occupational ban

KURDWATCH, December 21, 2010—The bar association’s Court of Professional Conduct has accused the attorney and human rights activist Radif Anwar Mustafa (b. 1967, married, four children) of being a member of an illegal organization and agitating against the Syrian government through his human rights work and his publications on human rights issues. On December 19, 2010, Mustafa was questioned on the charges raised against him. The attorney is involved in the Syrian Alliance Against the Death Penalty and is chairman and one of the founders of the Kurdish Committee for Human Rights (al-Rasid). According to the bar association, these activities cannot be reconciled with the 1981 Statute No. 39 regarding the organization of the profession of attorney. Radif Anwar Mustafa, who has worked as an attorney since 1997, is threatened with an occupational ban. The next hearing will take place on January 30, 2011.
