Al-Qamishli: Three people charged for participation in a Kurdish poetry festival

KURDWATCH, December 26, 2010—On December 21, 2010, the single military judge in al-Qamishli decided that ʿUmar ʿAbdi Ismaʿil (b. 1970, poet), ʿAbdulsamad Husayn Mahmud (b. 1962, poet) and Ahmad Fatah Ismaʿil (b. 1969) must remain in custody. Charges have been raised against them pursuant to Article 307 of the Criminal Code.
The Political Security Directorate summoned and arrested the defendants on December 18, 2010 because of their participation in the »Kurdish Poetry Festival« on November 19, 2010 in a town near al-Dschawadiya (Çilaxa). Before the annual festival could begin, members of the Political Security Directorate stormed the venue – the home of Ahmad Fatah Ismaʿil – and collected the personal data of those in attendance. ʿUmar ʿAbdi Ismaʿil and ʿAbdulsamad Husayn Mahmud are thought to be the organizers of the event.
